1) I assume they think this is a reference to Jesus because of the use of “Son of Man,” apparently ignoring the fact that the phrase appears throughout the hebrew bible and clearly means normal, non-supernatural people. This is even more clear since the first part of the verse is clearly talking about people and the poetic style common throughout the hebrew bible, particularly the psalms, is to doubly repeat sentiments (aka “parallelism”). (This is actually a form borrowed from earlier Ugaritic poetry.)

2) But even if “son of man” meant jesus, this makes no sense. Why would the psalmist ask why god cares about him? Shouldn’t he care about his “only begotten son”?

3) Jesus’ big reward is that he can have all the animals he wants? If anything, this seems like a clear reference to humanity as discussed in Genesis 1:26: “And God said: ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.’”

4) “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no salvation.” - Psalms 146:3

In situations like these, morals lose a lot of ground. Life boils down to surviving.

In fact, units went out of their way to make sure soldiers with moral objections to slaughtering Jews were given other duties…but within a few rounds of mass murder, every one of the initial objectors dropped their objections and joined in.

This wasn’t a case of men who had no chance to back out, it’s a case of men deliberately and knowingly opting in. The only shred of historical evidence supporting the claim that the soldiers’ families were hostages for their participation in mass murder is those soldiers’ claims after the war, which they made to keep their sorry murderous asses from being tried for war crimes. But because they were such fine, upstanding, civilized white men, people like you continue to accept their self-serving and factually false legal defenses at face value.

Here are some issues with “shit white Jews make” as a sentence, and the various things that tiny little sentence taps into. This is generally true across the board, though of course, context can and does make a difference.

1) it does imply the “Jews are all white, all Jews are white” stereotype, which is the most inaccurate stereotype of all time. It totally engages in erasure, for one thing, of a great many Jewish people.

2) For another, a great many times that it’s used, it is holding white-skinned Jews, who are NOT considered or treated as white on MUCH of the planet, more responsible for white supremacy than actual white people. Which is not cool. And it is deeply, deeply problemmatic. (Not to mention that “white Jews” is a US-centric term that simply does not hold water anywhere outside North America. The world is not the USA.)

3) If the context is issues in media, it does tap into the old trope of “Jews run the media” and “Jews run Hollywood,” which are itself branches of the old ZOG root. In this case, sticking the word “white” in front of it does not limit the fall-out to only white-passing Jews. The anti-Semitic stereotype hurts all Jews, of all colours and backgrounds; that’s the point of any stereotype that’s invoked, whether you shove the word “white” in there or not. The anti-Semitic fall-out will not stop at the doors of any subset of Jews of Colour just because the word “white” was put in there as some sort of fig leaf. (There is no privilege involved in being a Jew of Colour!) By contrast, if the phrase is something like “shit that Jews come up with,” in this context at least, it still taps into that same stereotype, and therefore is still wrong to do, but it does so WITHOUT the additional baggage of the above two issues.

4) bringing up someone’s Jewish ethnicity and/or religious practice (yes, it is both) into the mix when it is not relevant to the person’s misdeeds is holding their Jewish identity responsible, and therefore implicates the Jewish people as a whole. That is not ok. It is never ok.

Sometimes, one’s Jewish-ness does matter and is relevant to the subject at hand, such as in the context of inter-culture exchange, or the nature of some of the shit that’s going down in Israel-Palestine. When calling out someone for perpetuating -isms however, it’s much more problemmatic. It’d be similar to calling out someone and then saying “well what do you expect from this Egyptian Muslim” or “of course, it’s a Rromani who did this.”

Wow. Such an awful lot that goes into just a mere four words, isn’t it? And yet, that is exactly what happens when gentiles whip that line out. “Shit that white Jews do.” “Oh man, Jews always do this.” This is why Jews - of all colours - get so upset, this is why it touches a nerve. Such phrases tap into layers of oppression and oppressive history, and perpetuate dangers that face my people. Please try to be mindful of this.

I’m not originally from North America, but South America. In my original community Jews are mostly Maghrebim who immigrated in the 19th century; Sephardim who were in northern Morocco for centuries, descendants of Iberian Jews running away after the expulsion in the Iberian Peninsula and as a group they never mixed with the local Maghrebi population, they also immigrated to my city in the 19th century along with the Maghrebim (between those two groups, there were a thousand families immigrating over there around the same time); there are some Sephardim who came straight from the Iberian Peninsula in the 16th century and lived for the most part as Anusim (long story about those folks, goes beyond my point for now); there are many from Turkey, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia; a few from France, England, Germany and Lithuania — these latter groups ended up marrying into the larger population and are now mixed.

That means that at the esnogas (shuls, synagogues) we’re all shades of brown, with few white-passing folks. Despite all of that, I had to deal with “but you don’t look Jewish” and “Jews are supposed to be white and blonde”(*) even in a community in Brazil which is mostly Maghrebi and Sephardi.

The fact that there is a large Ashkenazi community going further south in the country doesn’t help. Gentiles use their existence to delegitimize our existence. Sadly the obsession with “white Jews” isn’t exclusive of North America.

(*) First, even I have never seen this disproportionate amount of blonde Jews. White passing, yes. Some blond, but mostly not. Second, even though this happened more than one time, with more than one person, in one situation the person justified that her friend was blonde and her friend’s mom was too, therefore this should be the normative look in the Jewish community. She also ignored the fact that the mother’s friend was a white-blonde-blue eyed gentile from northern Europe with no Jewish ancestry at all (not that there aren’t Jews who look like that, I personally know some, but to this specific context it was just… *sigh*).

I missed most of this intersectionality clusterfuck thanks to Shavuot, but it has been all over my dash and in my inbox since. And honestly, I’m very hesitant to respond, because the most important point to make in all this is something that I shouldn’t be the one to say.

Your blog is about being rude as fuck to anti-black people, because somebody damn well should be. My blog is about being rude as fuck to antisemitic people, because somebody damn well should be. But if those two aims are at cross-purposes, then we’ve fucked up—and it’s Black Jews, the people with skin in both games, who suffer most from that.

And neither I as a white Jew(*) nor you as a black Gentile have any right to speak for them, let alone squabble over them like dogs over a fucking bone. Because although both of us have blood ties to Black Jews (yes, Jewishness is an ethnicity), neither of our communities is a safe space for them, and neither of us can claim them as simply “one of my people” with a straight face.

When Black Jews in America enter predominantly white-passing Jewish spaces, their authenticity is questioned or outright denied. They are tokenized. They are subjected to the disdain and hostility many Jews give converts, on the ignorant, racist assumption that all Jews-by-birth are white-passing. They hear anti-black racist statements followed by (if they’re lucky) a “but not you” caveat. Yiddish has an anti-black slur in its dictionary—and yes, some Jews use it. When those same Black Jews enter predominantly Gentile black spaces, they face “race traitor” accusations from Black Power groups, Nation of Islam members, and others who claim that Jews “controlled” the American slave trade. They hear antisemitic slurs and stereotypes. Their experiences and identity are erased and appropriated by groups like the Black Israelites. They are tokenized and used to further conspiracy theories that Ashkenazi Jews are fakes, cheats, and Khazars(^)—even though many Black Jews are Ashkenazi.

Nor is this just an American issue. In Israel, the Beta Israel face forcible birth control, suppression of their cultural practices of Judaism, slurs, ghettoization, and poverty, and de facto immigration quotas. In Ethiopia, the Beta Israel were deprived of their land, labeled “Fal*shas” (literally “garbage”), restricted in their movements and living areas, forcibly converted, and massacred by black Ethiopian Christians.

Black Jews have no safe spaces.

Antisemitism, even against white-passing Jews, hurts Black Jews. Anti-black racism, even against black Gentiles, hurts Black Jews. And because that is the case, both our communities need to (a) work on our goddamned intersectionality issues and (b) stop speaking over (or arguing who has the better “claim” to) Black Jews. Period.

Also, that “Fritz the Cat” movie is fucking disgusting, and Bakshi is undeniably racist scum (he also wrote/directed a film called “Coonskin” which I’m told is every bit as awful as the title suggests…and which Bakshi claims is his “best film”). So fuck him.

And that’s all I have to say about this.

(*) As the blond, blue-eyed, WASP-surnamed, U.S.-based daughter of a white man and a white-coding Ashkenazi woman, I would feel ridiculous calling myself anything other than white. That is, however, a personal call, and I in no way mean to okay the application of the term “white Jew” to any other ethnic Jew. Just so we’re all perfectly clear on that.

(^) The reason Jews tend to react with such outrage to “all the people in the Bible were black” is because nine times out of ten, that statement is made as “evidence” that Ashkenazi Jews aren’t descended from the ancient Hebrews. In truth, some characters in the Bible were absolutely black (Moses’s wife and children, for instance—Aaron and Miriam’s disgust that Moses married “a Cushite woman” is probably the earliest documented instance of intra-Jewish anti-black racism), some were possibly/probably black (Ephraim and Manasseh, the children of Joseph and his Egyptian wife Asenath, would fall in this category, as would Ishmael, Abraham’s son with his Egyptian slave Hagar), and some were absolutely not black, but hardly Northern European either (for instance the patriarchs and matriarchs, all of whom were Sumerian).
